John was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1971. He studied english at the Trinity College in Dublin as well as being a student of Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia and started writing stories later on. While he taught at the Irish Writers Centre and the University of East Anglia, he was awarded the writing Fellowship for 2005. His first book was The Theif of Time and it was published in 2000 after that he wrote The Congress of Rough Riders one year after. He wrote The Boy in the Striped Pajamas in 2006 and it was quickly watched by both adults and children then the film was released in 2008. He lives with his wife in Dublin, while creating his new book The Terrible thing That Happend to Barnaby Brocket. The book is about Barnaby Brocket who is born with a disability of defying Earth's gravity pull. He is a lonely boy who has no friends and floats ten feet in the air. This book relates quite well with The Boy in the Striped Pajamas because all three children are lonely, Bruno moves to another town not knowing anyone, Shmuel being a Nazi camp worker not having known his father and Barnaby Brocket always ten feet above everyone, they all have a loneliness relationship in common but still making them different from one another.
